Mission 

It is the mission of the Taos County Sheriff's Department to provide professional, responsive, and caring law enforcement services to the residents, visitors and businesses of Taos County.

We believe a safe community can only exist through a partnership with our employees, residents, businesses and other public entities.  

We pledge to provide all services in an expeditious, effective and courteous manner while encouraging community participation in the development of goals and objectives for our organization.  

We will strive to be leaders and a national model in all aspects of law enforcement, and homeland security.

  

Duties & Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of Taos County Sheriff’s Department include but are not limited to:

  • the preservation of public peace
  • detect and prevent the commission of crime
  • enforce the laws and ordinances of the State County
  • apprehend and arrest criminals and those violate or are lawfully accused of violating such laws and ordinances

Short Term Goals

·         Open Communications with law enforcement agencies within jurisdiction and adjoining counties

·         Communication with Board of County Commissioners and County Manager

·         Complete an updated policy and procedures manual for Sheriff’s Department 

·         Hold monthly meetings with Sheriff’s Department supervisors and quarterly with staff

·         Sub-stations or satellite stations in outlaying communities

·         Equip all patrol units with video cameras and each deputy with recorder

·         Enhance and improve a safe and secure evidence room

·         Improve work area

 

Long Term Goals

·         Advanced training for Deputies and Supervisors

·         Search for grants for patrol units (fleet) and equipment

·         Increase force with at least two deputies per year if feasible

·         Install Sheriff’s Department signs on State Road 150/State Road 522 and US 64 to guide residents to Taos County Sheriff’s Department

·         Enhance and improve Animal Control procedures and public awareness for adoption and licensing of all pets

·         Compare and increase pay scales to local and adjoining counties

·         Mandate cell phones for all Sheriff’s Department personnel

·         Consistent evaluation of equipment for repairs or upgrades 

·         Annual incentive pay for physical fitness for department employees
