Taos, NM (February 9, 2018) - For Immediate Release.  The Canjilon Ranger District of the Carson National Forest will be burning slash piles sometime during the month of February when conditions and weather are favorable. The piles are located 5 miles southeast of the communities of Canjilon and Placita Garcia on Mesa Juan Domingo adjacent to Forest Road 693 and Forest Road 802. Two different areas of slash piles near Mesa Juan Domingo will be burned totaling 220 acres.

The purpose of the project is to reduce hazardous fuels following thinning and fuelwood removal activities. Reducing hazardous fuels will help reduce the threat of high severity, high intensity wildfire to the public, adjacent private property and natural resources in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) area that surrounds the communities of Canjilon and Placita Garcia. Treatments will help fire managers re-introduce fire into a fire adapted ecosystem, thus improving forest health, forest structure, forest resiliency and wildlife habitat.

Smoke may be visible from the communities of Canjilon, Placita Garcia, Cebolla, Las Nutrias, Tierra Amarilla and Abiquiu. Smoke may impact the communities of Canjilon, Placita Garcia, Cebolla, and El Rito and may impact US Highway 84 and State Highway 115.

Smoke from the prescribed burn will be monitored to ensure that the New Mexico Environment Department’s Air Quality Bureau regulations are being met. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures. Information on air quality and protecting your health can be found online at the New Mexico Department of Health’s website at
